About Off-Grid Gear Guide

👋Hey, I’m Bryce — your gear guide. I started Off-Grid Gear Guide because I’m chasing something different: freedom, sustainability, and a lifestyle that doesn’t rely on crumbling systems to survive.

Back during the height of the pandemic, my wife and I decide to renovate and live in a 28′ travel trailer (see pics below). Like a lot of people, we were trying to figure it all out — on a tight income, in tight quarters. When the trailer started falling apart, we couldn’t afford the repairs, so we moved into a small studio apartment.

That experience sparked something in us. Not just frustration — but a vision. One day, we want to build our own off-grid cabin in the Pacific Northwest, grow our own food, create our own energy, and leave the rat race behind.

Why I Built This Site

This site exists for people like us — folks who are fed up with overpriced, overcomplicated systems and want to take some power back into their own hands (literally and figuratively).

We’re not trying to vanish into the woods and disappear from society. Quite the opposite. We believe in freedom, sustainability, and community — and we know we’re not the only ones out here thinking this way.

There are a lot of amazing creators doing real work in this space. Shoutout to:

  • 🛠️ The Prepared — for practical prepping without the doomsday drama
  • 🌿 Root Simple — a humble blog about urban homesteading, DIY living, and doing more with less
  • 🔌 Off Grid World — packed with inspiration and real-world off-grid builds
  • 🏕️ The Tiny Life — focused on tiny homes, intentional living, and off-grid philosophy
  • Backwoods Home Magazine — old-school but packed with timeless off-grid skills and independence

If you’ve ever learned something from a homesteader’s how-to article, a van lifer’s YouTube channel, or a Reddit deep dive on solar setups — we’re with you. Off-Grid Gear Guide is just one small voice in a much bigger, growing community of people who want to live smarter, freer, and more intentionally.

We’re trying to build something resilient — not just for ourselves, but for the next generation. Because let’s be honest: the world’s running out of resources, and the people in charge aren’t exactly knocking it out of the park. That’s why we’re choosing to rely less on the government, less on the grid, and more on ourselves — and each other.

What You’ll Find Here

This site breaks down gear that supports real off-grid living — for cabins, vans, bug-out setups, or just better backup systems. I research everything obsessively before I write about it. My goal is to help you make smarter choices without spending hours crawling through product pages or shady “top 10” lists.

What you’ll find here:

  • Practical gear guides (no fluff)
  • Real-world comparisons from users and off-grid communities
  • Honest opinions on what works, what doesn’t, and what’s actually worth your money

Transparency

This site is supported by affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you buy something through a product link — at no extra cost to you. That helps me keep the site running and helps us inch closer to our dream of building that off-grid cabin.

But know this: I only recommend gear I’ve researched the hell out of. If I wouldn’t use it, I won’t suggest it.

Let’s Build Something Better

If you’ve lived off-grid — or are working toward it like us — I want to hear from you. What gear do you swear by? What should I avoid like the plague? This site is a work in progress, just like our off-grid dream.

So, if you’re into resilience, resourcefulness, and creating a life that’s a little more in your hands and a little less in theirs — welcome. You’re in the right place.

Thanks for being here,
Bryce the Gear Guide
